Vegan Sloppy Joes Recipe

Heart Healthy Recipe Ingredients: 

  • 2 Garlic cloves - minced 
  • 1 Medium Onion - chopped 
  • 1 Green Bell Pepper - chopped 
  • 2 cups TVP (textured vegetable protein) granules or flakes - mixed 
  • 3 3/8 cups Hot water (for TVP) 
  • 6 oz. Tomato Paste 
  • 1/2 cup Water 
  • 1 teaspoon Oregano 
  • 1/4 cup Catsup 
  • 1/4 teaspoon Cayenne Pepper 
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce - vegetarian 
  • 1 tablespoon Honey (optional) 
  • 1 tablespoon Salt (optional) 
  • 8 large Rolls 
  • Shredded Lettuce 

Food Preparation Instructions:

  • Saute garlic, onion, pepper & TVP. 
  • In a bowl, mix tomato paste with water,oregano, ketchup, cayenne, worcestershire sauce & honey.  
  • Stir into skillet. 
  • Bring to a boil & add salt if desired.  
  • The sauce should be thick but spreadable. 
  • Toast rolls if desired 
  • Spoon the sauce over the bottom half of the roll. 
  • Pile on the lettuce & top with remaining roll half.
